16 CFR 1632 is a Mattresses and mattress pads (Cigarette test)
Scope:
All mattresses & All mattress pads
Criteria:
- Six mattresses or mattress pads are required if only one side can be tested. Test each of the six surfaces with at least 18 lighted cigarettes.
- The char length is not more than 2 inches (5.1 cm) in any direction from the nearest point of the cigarette.
Test procedure:
- Washing and Drying Ten Times Before Testing for Chemical Retardant Pad(AATCC 124-82 )
- Conditioning (T: ≥65ºF, H: <55% at least 48h )
- Bare Mattress Test
- Two-sheet Tests
16 CFR 1633 is a Mattresses and Mattress/ Foundation Sets (open flame)
Scope:
- All mattress sets, manufactured, imported or renovated on or after the effective date of this standard are subject to the requirements of the standard.
Definition:
- Mattress means a resilient material or combination of materials enclosed by a ticking (used alone or in combination with other products) intended or promoted for sleeping upon. Such as adult mattresses, youth mattresses, crib mattresses (including portable crib mattresses), futons, flip chairs without a permanent back or arms, sleeper chairs, and water beds or air mattresses etc.
- Mattress set means either a mattress and foundation labeled by the manufacturer for sale as a set, or a mattress labeled by the manufacturer for sale without any foundation.
Test method:
- All tests must be conducted on specimens that are no smaller than a twin size, unless the largest size mattress set produced is smaller than a twin size, in which case the largest size must be tested.。
- The flaming ignition source was a pair of T-shaped propane burners. The sample exposed 70 seconds for the top burner and 50 seconds for the side burner.
- Test period: 30 min
Test criteria:
- The peak rate of heat release shall not exceed 200 kilowatts ("kW") at any time within the 30 minute test; and
- The total heat release shall not exceed 15 megajoules ("MJ") for the first 10 minutes of the test.
