EN 45545-2:2020 New standard for fire, smoke and toxic substances in EU railway vehicles

EN 45545-2:2020 was developed by Technical Committee CEN/TC 256 "Railway Applications". This European standard should obtain the status of a national standard by publishing the corresponding text or endorsement no later than February 2021, and conflicting national standards should be withdrawn no later than February 2021. The EN 45545-2:2020 standard is planned to replace the EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015 standard. The latest EU standard, EN 45545, has officially replaced various European standards such as the British standard BS6853, German standard DIN 5510-2, and French standard NF F16-101, becoming the universal mandatory fire protection standard for rail vehicle materials in European countries.

EN 45545-2 is developed based on the International Union of Railways (UIC) and existing fire safety regulations for railway vehicles in different European countries. EN 45545-2 is the core part of the most commonly used material fire testing in the new EN 45545 standard. Here, we mainly analyze this part of the EN 45545-2 test.

EN45545-2:2020 is divided into 28 categories, R1-R28, based on the ultimate use of the material; According to the risk level of vehicle operation, there are three fire risk levels: HL1, HL2, and HL3 (with HL3 being the highest level requirement).

The old standard EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015 divides materials into 26 categories, R1-R26, based on their ultimate use.

The latest standard EN 45545-2:2020 divides materials into 28 categories, R1-R28, based on their ultimate use. The R1-R26 categories are basically consistent with the old standards, with the addition of R27 light diffusers and display screen covers, and R28 floor composite materials (including floor substrates and floor coverings).
