The role of EN 13823 Single Burning Item Test in the European grading system
EN 13823 Single burning item testing can be considered as a pillar of the European grading system for building products. B-D class (combined with test results from EN ISO 11925-2), A2 class (combined with test results from EN ISO 1716 or EN ISO 1182), and sometimes A1 class all require test results.
Testing principle
Place the sample in a 30 kW diffusion flame. The combustion gases are collected and analyzed by the exhaust hood. Through gas analysis, the heat release rate of the sample can be calculated based on the depletion of oxygen.
Evaluate smoke generation by measuring the attenuation of the light beam caused by smoke in the exhaust pipe. Observe the combustion behavior of the sample to understand the spread of flames and the occurrence of combustion particles and droplets.
Sample requirements
The test samples should represent as much as possible the product's market launch or final use, including vertical and horizontal seams.
A complete test requires testing at least 3 samples. For product coverage, additional tests can be conducted, such as thickness, density, or other applicable aspects.
Key Results
- Heat release rate, HRR, in kW.
- Total heat release, THR, MJ.
- Fire growth rate indices, FIGRA, W/s.
- Smoke production rate, SPR, in m2/s.
- Total smoke production, TSP, in m2.
- Smoke growth rate index, SMOGRA, in cm2/s2.
- Lateral flame spread.
- Flaming particles or droplets.
